Abstract

Objectives: This study aims to provide preliminary data for the development of a spinal health promotion program for adolescents by examining high school students¡¯ posture management behaviors and related factors.

Methods: The study subjects were 309 high school students in Busan Metropolitan city, Korea. The data were collected from June 1 to June 10, 2004. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, stepwise multiple regression using SPSS Win 12.0.

Results: The study showed that 60.9% of the students had bad posture, and only 57.7% of them replied that they were trying to manage to practice good posture. Meanwhile, 54.9% of all students experienced pains due to bad posture. The behavior score of the posture management of the students was as low as 1.69 on the average while the self-efficacy score averaged at 3.03. Factors influencing the posture management behavior of the respondents included self-efficacy, posture awareness, father¡¯s educational level and economic status.

Conclusions: Proper information on posture management must be provided in order to promote the spinal health of high school students and prevent spinal scoliosis. At the same time, educational programs for the right posture management of adolescents must be developed and enhanced.
